Safetouseit cookware safety criteria

In the following lines, you will find detailed steps and criteria that I use when evaluating cookware for myself as well as for the Safetouseit recommendation page. Take a closer look and maybe you will find some of these steps helpful when you search for safe cookware alternatives on your own.

Step 1.

I study different cookware materials and their safety aspects. Using research studies, toxicity databases and government authority recommendations I am gathering the data about which substances and materials can be harmful to health, and under which conditions. Finally, I am making a summary of conclusions about cookware materials and practices that should be avoided. At the end, I am outlining the cases there is not enough data so I can make a clear conclusion.

Research databases that I use: European Food Safety Authority recommendations, NCBI PubMed database, American cancer society reports, German BfR institute recommendations, California office of environmental health hazard assessment recommendations, and many others.

In Safetouseit posts, you will find a detailed evaluation of different cookware material’s safety, as well as all of the additional references that I have used for evaluating the topics.

Step 2.

I investigate the cookware safety regulations and certification. The main aim is to understand which of them can be used as a relevant guarantee of cookware safety. (see more about the topic here) This includes both US and EU regulations related to food contact materials.

As a summary of this research, I have defined two certification criteria that can be taken as a good standard for cookware safety. All of the cookware pieces presented on the recommendation page need to comply with at least one of them.

In the first case, cookware pieces need to be in accordance with EU standards as well the standards of the specific EU countries that have strict safety regulations(France or Germany). The second option is that they comply with California proposition 65 and they clearly show the certification of product testing derived from a University laboratory or some other independent eligible institution.

Next to all of the presented products, you will find marks that correspond to their safety compliance. Additionally, within the post about Cookware safety regulations, you will find out a detailed description of them as well as other info related to this topic

Step 3.

I am searching for brands that are offering cookware in compy with previous steps. In most cases, I contact the companies directly to get all of the information that I need and to get a comprehensive picture of each brand.

I usually ask companies to provide me with additional information about the certificates and regulations that they comply with.  I only consider brands that provide me clearly with information that I requre.

Step 4.

In order to understand the functionality of every product, I am investigating product reviews. Products on the Safetouseit recommendation page are usually marked with 50+, 100+, 500+, or more reviews. I use review abundance as a very important criterion since it gives a good overview of experiences and difficulties that people come up with when using certain utensil piece.

Finally, I am testing some cookware pieces by myself and trying to provide comprehensive first-hand information. In the upcoming months, expect to see some new videos on Safetouseit that include testing of different cookware pieces that I present on the recommendation page.

Step 5.

After reviewing all of the previous steps I am deciding should I put certain cookware pieces on the recommendation page.

When I found some cookware brands that fit all of the mentioned criteria I try to apply for its affiliative program which helps me with funding Safetouseit.

By purchasing the cookware through some of the links on my website I am receiving a small commission which helps me constantly improve Safetouseit and bring more value for you.
